Cycling to Elements Casino Victoria

Good news if you'd rather pedal out to View Royal: two regional cycling trails pass close to the casino. This page gives the distances from the map, and what the Car-Free desk could not find, like a bike rack.

Two trails close by

On OpenStreetMap, two regional cycling trails come near the casino at 1708 Island Highway. One is the Galloping Goose Regional Trail. The other is the E&N Rail Trail - Humpback Connector, and the map lists the Capital Regional District as its operator. Both pass about 400 m from the casino building, measured in a straight line.

That straight line is not a route. Roads bend, so the way from either trail to the building will be longer than the number suggests. The Car-Free desk does not describe that last stretch, and you'll want a map of your own before setting out. Keep in mind that the 400 m is measured to the building itself.

The ride out from downtown

Measured along the E&N Rail Trail - Humpback Connector on OpenStreetMap, the distance is about 10.6 km. That runs from the trail's point nearest downtown Victoria, at Esquimalt Road, to its point nearest the casino. From there, the casino building sits about 400 m away in a straight line, and the streets in between add their own length.

As a point of comparison, the casino sits 7.8 km from downtown Victoria as the crow flies. Trails cover more ground than that because they follow the terrain, not a straight edge. This guide offers no riding time. Riders all move at their own pace, so only distances measured on map data appear here, and timing is left to each rider.

Where to leave the bike

The casino's pages say nothing about bicycles, and OpenStreetMap shows no bicycle parking within 250 m of the building. So the honest answer is that the Car-Free desk does not know where a bike can be locked. A call to 250-391-0311 before you ride out is the way to ask. As a friend's tip, carry your own lock anyway, in case the spot you were hoping for isn't there.

What to pack for the ride

  1. Lights, front and back: a good general habit, since your ride home may well come after dark.
  2. A rain layer that folds small, because island weather can turn over the course of an evening.
  3. Your own lock, since the casino lists no bike parking and the map shows none within 250 m.
  4. Government-issued photo ID, because every person entering a B.C. casino shows it and security scans it at the door.

Asked on the way out

How far is the casino from downtown by trail?

Along the E&N Rail Trail - Humpback Connector, it is about 10.6 km from the trail's point nearest downtown, at Esquimalt Road, to its point nearest the casino. The building is then about 400 m away in a straight line.

Is there a bike rack at the casino?

No rack is listed. The casino's pages say nothing about bicycles, and OpenStreetMap shows no bicycle parking within 250 m. Call 250-391-0311 before riding out to ask where a bike can be locked.

Can I take my bike on the bus?

The guide has no information on that. BC Transit publishes its own rules, along with current times, at bctransit.com.
